WHAT BROUGHT “BREATHING” TO LIFE…

I had no funds to make this movie, just the lots of ideas and the fire to make them happen, so inspired by Robert Rodriguez book “Rebel Without a Crew” in which he mentions that he would look around at what he had and make a movie using those elements, I looked around, I had a bath tub, always had good resistance in the water and to add to the story, lots of anger and pain watching some very sad
events happening in the world.

I’ve always been fascinated with the unlimited number of things we can do in the water, how it feels like flying. From this water obsession I always wanted to play dead in the water. But any of the films I worked before as an actress required such a thing, so I came up with the idea for “BREATHING”, also inspired by some horrible events from around the world that really affected and disturbed me and bugged me.

The first version of “BREATHING” was an experimental challenge that I literally did all by myself for the underground film festival movement called KINO (for the branch in Sydney/Australia). After screening for many film industry friends and receiving a very good feedback, I got really motivated and decided that it would be worth to put some extra time and work into it and decided to gather a small crew and cast together and reshoot the entire film to fix some technical mistakes and to add some extra ideas I had to include in it, to make it even better to screen it in even more film festivals.

I thought about changing the title and making into a whole new film, but the essence and the main story is still the same from the original experiment, so it wouldn’t make sense to change title.

So “BREATHING” came to life again, bigger, bolder, hotter.

BREATHING was selected for “A Night of Horror International Film Festival”, in which it screened to a full house in a completely sold out session!

BREATHING was also screened at the “Newtown Flicks Film Festival” and “Vila do Conde Film Market”.

SHOOTING THE BATH SCENE

I wanted to deliver the best dead in the water scene in cinema history ever. From my water obsession and regular water experiments I knew I could reach that, but I knew that to go to the extent that I was willing to go, I would have to do it alone because anyone watching it live would freak out and probably interrupt me because they wouldn’t be familiar with what I’m able to do. I didn’t want to have the possibility of being interrupted, so I after filming all other scenes for the film, I told the team that this one I needed to do on my own.

I waited till everybody at home finished their doings for the day to make sure nobody would need to use that particular bathroom, which was the only one with a bathtub in the house and it was my grandmother in law bathroom (at the time I was living with the grand-in-laws helping to take care of them). She normally would to go to sleep very late night after watching TV till late, so waited till she finished dinner and was off far from the bathroom in the living room watching TV and asked her to use the other toilets if she needed to go because I needed to use her bathroom.

I got everything ready, then turned on the lights and camera, and there I went to my death scene!

I did a few takes to increase the floating dead time a little bit more in each one. I wasn’t wearing a watch and had no idea of the time, I was just holding my breath in the water until I couldn’t hold any more, then I would come out.

After every go I would ask myself if I could hold a little bit longer to make it even better.

Somewhere between takes grandma was knocking on door asking if was ok, I told her I was just having a bath for her not to worry.

After a few takes it was hard to breath even out of water because with the door and windows closed to block sound, and with the heat from the lights and hot water, the bathroom was very suffocating, but I knew I could do even better.

On the last take, I told myself, I really would not leave the water until my very last millisecond when I could not handle at all. By the end of it, when there was absolutely nothing left on me, I got my head out. I’m pretty sure that one more second I would be dead for real. I dragged myself to open the door so I could breathe because there was no more air in the bathroom.

I had no idea how any of it looked like because I wasn’t watching it and as per my own instruction had nobody watching it, so I only found out what I have achieved when watching everything in the computer screen for the edit.

It was freaky watching myself still dead for so long, kind of sickening.

I had a few takes of dead under water for over 1 minute, and the longest of all was 1:58 minutes.

I was happy, most of all, it make me sick watching it, it was agonizing, so I knew I would provide an interesting experience and reaction to the audience.

Later I had friends who are doctors that after watching the movie told me that it is very dangerous doing that and I could have got some serious health damage. Lucky I didn’t know that and lucky that I didn’t get any health damage, but anyway here is the warning, kids: don’t try this at home!

Please remember to turn off the lights and watch it on full screen for a complete breathless experience!

Enjoy, Like & Share with your friends!

Improvised Introduction Videos

After filming main filmmaker’s interviews, sunset was so beautiful that inspired me to improvise a little introduction for the books just to capture that stunning sky!

I know it’s a little bit dark and all, it was the end of a long day and I had a cold, but sometimes in life, we don’t have time to grab the lights and get all perfectly tech, we have to seize the moment that is right there in front of us and be spontaneous, otherwise we miss the sunset!

Marvellous and Inspiring Baz!

Shailla & Kendi

Last week my friend Kendi who is a Production Designer invited me to the International Media Launch Event of “Strictly Ballroom The Musical”, she wasn’t sure if the Director Baz Luhrmann was going to be there, but there was a high possibility. I was just happy to catch up with a great friend in an exciting event like this, if Baz ended up being there, wow, that would be an amazing bonus!
On the way there I was writing to my best friend from Brazil, Aline, and I told her about the possibility that I was about to listen to our great idol live, and writing that started to give me butterflies.

I met Kendi at the Town Hall entry, we waited a bit with the other guests till the doors open (we got there early and the doors were closed
for rehearsals), and to add to the thrill it was my first time ever inside the Town Hall building as well. We checked in, received our goody bags (it just kept getting more and more awesome – wasn’t expecting goody bags either), and a little bit after they opened the main doors and we all got in.
Except for the very front rows of tables which were reserved, there were no allocated seats, so Kendi being like me as in she also enjoys being part of the show or as close to the show as possible, we sat all the way on the front, at the second row of tables just behind the front reserved
ones.
To add up to awesome experience, we were all being served drinks and yummy cocktail food, which was perfect because I was a little bit
hungry after not having much time to eat all day.

Then, the show started!
The presenter had a wonderful sense of humour and everything was stunningly beautiful, the make up, the hair dos,  the dresses, the dancing, the lights, and everything had the special Baz’s magic touch of great energy and life!
Kendi recognized Catherine Martin at the front row table next to us, awesome, we happened to sit next to Baz’s first lady!
And after lots of dancing and great speeches by Global Creatures representatives sharing some amazing stories with us, the creator of all came to stage, Mr Baz!

It must have been a mix of wine, plus writing to Aline on the way to the show and remembering being back in Brazil watching “Rome &
Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge” together and dreaming of being part of all that, and all the beautiful lights, and most of all, his incredible inspiring stories of how he started and how he also overcame obstacles, all I know is that all that made me very emotional and I started to cry.
To add up to all surprises of the night, in the end of his speech, he opened to the audience for Q&A!
I was sure that it was going to be a wonderful event, but it was even more fabulous than my expectation, and everything was surprise after
surprise and I had no idea that the opportunity would be presented for a Q&A with Baz, therefore I had not particular question formed in my mind yet, but at the same time I could not miss the chance of talking with Baz Luhrmann, so I just put my hand up to ask a question and since I have always been good at improvisation I was sure that the right question would come while the microphone was being brought to me.
Lucky to give me some additional time to come up with my question, someone on the other side got to ask a question first, and by the
time Baz finished answering the first question I was still so thrilled that I still haven’t totally decided on my question, but had a little idea, so I kept my hand up to be the next anyway!

I don’t remember precisely the words, but he was absolutely lovely, after I introduced myself and I told him I was originally from Brazil and mentioned how I was just writing to my best friend from Brazil on my way to the event, and how she would be thrilled to meet him as well! He double checked that he was pronouncing my name right, which he did perfectly, and he mentioned that he was just in Argentina recently dancing the Tango! We talked a bit and he had great sense of humour with all my excitement. When he asked what was my question, I asked something along the lines of “if he was going to have a Brazilian character in his next movie”, he answered something along the lines that “he would keep that in mind and he would keep an eye on my work”.
Thank you Baz!
Baz Luhrmann words will stay with me forever, it has been always great to listen to him on interviews, but it was even more remarkable to
listen to his philosophy and drive in person.
I told him how I relate to his philosophy of smashing fear, and as it says in his Bazmark Insignia “A LIFE LIVED IN FEAR, IS A LIFE HALF
LIVED”, I have also everyday kicking fear in the butt and working towards achieving my dreams.
What a wonderful night!
Thank you Kendi for inviting me to such a wonderful and inspiring event!
Lots of love,
Shailla

A Rewarding Day in the Fabulous World of Writers

A Rewarding day in the Fabulous World of Writers

A couple of weeks ago I got a very special invitation by the Founder of Abhinay School of Performing Arts Aishveryaa Nidhi to participate as a guest actor at the Intensive Weekend Workshop on “How to Write a Ten Minutes Play” taught by the master of ten minute plays Alex Broun.

Writers and Actors - Photo courtesy of Abhinay School of Performing Arts

The course went from Friday till Sunday. The writers had their intensive sessions Friday evening, and the whole day on Saturday, where they learned what makes a good 10 minutes play, how to pitch the play and explore the ideas to develop into a good play, story and structure, how to rehearse a moved reading with the actors, how to create memorable characters and the important nature of surprise in theatre through character revelation.

In the end of day two, Saturday evening, the new writers went home with the task of writing their first 10 minutes play, and bring it in the following morning session ready to be workshopped with the actors, then explored and tested on the stage through readings and rehearsals throughout the Sunday morning and
afternoon session.

Then, in the last session of the course, in the end of Sunday’s afternoon, the course reached its climax by having all participants scripts performed through a moved reading by the actors for an audience, where the writers got to see how their work came to life on stage, and how the audience responded to it.

I and other guest actors came in to be part of the moved readings during the entire Sunday session.

To start the day Alex Broun guided us through a fun body and voice warm up session, following by great interactive games to get everybody to know each other.

Then all the writers line up on stage to pitch the stories in their 10 minutes plays and to start casting the actors to workshop their plays.

It was very impressive how the new writers had their 10 minutes play and pitch ready overnight. Most of them were not expecting to have all this happening in such short period of time. They had the stories in their mind, but not on paper yet, and they were given the challenge to have to present it about 16 hours later after their last session, and they made it.

Out of all the plays pitched, the one that got my attention the most was “Matriarch Sin” by Lulu Ruane Paton, first time ever writing, but brilliant material based on real stories. The play was about a conflict of mother and daughter meeting for the first time ever about 2 decades later since the mother abandoned the daughter as a baby. It would mean a lot to me to perform in that work and I really wanted Lulu to cast me for the role of the daughter.

Before Lulu have her turn to announce her chosen actors, I was cast in another play, “Saturday Night in Sydney” by Sam Dandy, a really fun play based also by real events experienced by the writer who is a taxi driver and has lots of stories to tell with such eventful job dealing with all sorts of people including the
very drunk ones on late nights. I got to play one of the trouble making girls drunk with her friends making the end of the Saturday night shift of the taxi driver character very challenging.

“Saturday Night in Sydney” team and Mr Broun - Shailla's Blackberry Pic

That was lots of fun to play with a fun cast and lots to explore around, but I couldn’t take Lulu’s play out of my mind, so on a little break from the first rehearsal, I went to tell Lulu how her pitch got my attention and I was looking forward to watching the performance later to find out more about the story,  and for my wonderful surprise which I had no idea, she told me that she choose me to play the role of the daughter, and was just waiting for me to finish the rehearsal on the first play that I was working on, to join her and the actress playing the role of the mother for reading and rehearsal. That was very exciting news because I didn’t know that we actors were going to work in more than one play, and even more exciting that I was actually going to work with Lulu on “Matriarch Sin”, my favourite play of all!

After I finished working with Sam Dandy and the cast of “Saturday Night in Sydney”, I didn’t even want a break, I was too excited and wanted to keep working so I joined Lulu and Coleen (the actress playing the mother role) immediately to start reading and working on “Matriarch Sin”. Lulu already had a big eventful
Saturday night planned with the family, which left her with fewer time to write a full 10 minutes script to be presented on Sunday morning, but she knew the story so well, that even though it was a very short script, it was so clear and punchy that it was a complete joy to work in it, and very easy to connect with the characters and story and understand each moment of it.

Rajpal Shaila Aileen & Lulu - Shailla's Blackberry Pic

When the time working on “Matriarch Sin” came to an end, there were more surprises: more roles on more plays to read and rehearse for the stage presentations schedule for later on the day.

I got to work with news editor Neena Badhwar on her play “Political Recrimination” alongside one of the largest casts from all plays in a satire about many of the big names current politicians living in the future in a retirement home in a complete changed country. Wonderful imagination by Neena infused with lots of big strong real life characters.

After working on “Political Recrimination” I had one more surprise: one more exciting character in one more fun play to work! Also got cast on “Call me Ismail Tonight” by Rajpal Sandhu, a lovely unconventional romantic comedy full of crazy surprises and turns, in which two friends on their way to heal their broken hearts get interrupted by a very obnoxious salesman!

After a continuous day of readings and rehearsals, in the end of the day all plays got presented as a performed moved reading to the full house audience, which was a scary and exciting experience at the same time!

After all the presentations, Alex Broun gave his feedback to the writers, and they a small ceremony to receive their elegantly framed presented attendance certificates.

I truly enjoyed every moment of this day and I got a lot out of it, first of all because I made wonderful new friends and I got to spent time with lovely old friends. Secondly, it was a joy to work in such a collaborative environment with a strong sense of community, with no egos, but just lots of passion for the craft and just people helping each other to grow and accomplish their work, and it was beautiful to see so many beautiful stories coming to life in such a short period of time.

It was also proven once again that we humans have such an incredible power to make magic happen when we are put under the pressure of deadlines. So many of the new writers had all these stories in their minds, and have been dreaming and wanting to write for a long time, but never had that extra push to make them do it and turn the dream of becoming a writer a reality, but thankfully they had the motivation to explore their dreams further and learn how to do it right, and they choose the right coach that showed them how to do it, and gave them a deadline to get it done, and they did it, just like that, years-months-weeks of stories spinning in their heads were put into paper and brought into life on the stage, and it was just the beginning in this new road that they opened in their lives!

Congratulations to all of you, the ones mentioned here, and the ones that I didn’t get to work with, but got to watch the performed moved readings of their plays, and it was a delight to watch the work of upcoming writers who mostly work full time in demanding jobs, and many also have families to take care of, and to also watch the work of very young writers as 11 and 14 years old writers who presented beautiful complex stories about families and love.

Thank you for Aishveryaa Nidhi for inviting me to spending a rewarding day in the amazing world of writers, which is where it all begins.

Meisner Training

After working with so many great actors in so many film projects, and always researching to find out some of the background of their discipline and commitment with their work, I found out that many of the amazing actors that I worked with in Sydney have studied the Meisner Technique at The Actors Pulse. Being a former student of the Meisner Technique before, and loving its principles, I finally had the chance to put aside some extra time a week to go back to acting training, and joined one of the most respected Sydney’s acting school, The Actors Pulse. I’m very excited!

Chloe Premiere at the Fantastic Planet Film Festival

Scary film “Chloe” written & directed by Mark Paul, in which I played the title role of Dr Chloe, who confronts the supernatural and pays a very high price for it, premiered at the Fantastic Planet Film Festival!

The festival took place a couple of weeks ago in the pumping heart of Newtown, with all the selected films showing at the fantastic big screens of the Dendy Cinemas, with after parties at The Bank Hotel & Mary’s Bar, where all the local and international guest filmmakers got to hang out and got into deeper conversations about the filmmaking process over drinks and pizza.

Loving films & film festivals, specially when they bring the best from all around the globe and have so many Q&A sessions with guests International filmmakers, I attended not only the premiere of “Chloe”, but as many sessions as possible that I could fit into my current shooting schedule, and got to meet and talk with some very inspiring filmmakers.

Thanks once again for the organizers of the Fantastic Film Festival for making such a great event happen in Sydney!
